How a payline produces a result
A payline is a defined path across the reels. In a conventional left-to-right game, matching symbols must appear along an active path, starting from the first reel. Three matching symbols scattered across unrelated positions need not form a winning line. The paytable identifies the required count and the prize for each symbol.
The number beside a coin symbol is not always the price of one spin. A game may multiply coin value by coins per line and the number of active lines. For example, 20 lines at 0.50 units per line cost 10 units for one spin. Some modern games instead show a single total-bet control with all lines permanently active.
Ways count positions, not drawn lines
A ways-to-win slot evaluates qualifying symbols on consecutive reels without requiring them to follow a drawn payline. If a symbol appears twice on the first reel, once on the second and three times on the third, those positions can produce 2 × 1 × 3 = 6 qualifying combinations under a matching-symbol rule. The minimum reel count and direction are specified by that game.
This differs from cluster games, which group touching symbols, and from games that pay for enough matching symbols anywhere on the screen. The advertised number of ways describes the evaluation system; it does not say how frequently a particular symbol will arrive.
